Keep The Light On
Today’s gospel shows us how to keep the light of Christ in our lives. We have all heard the saying: “Our eyes are the windows to our soul.” Today, Jesus explains the importance of our inner light and how we can achieve and maintain it. How many times have you seen someone, and just by the look in their eyes, you knew something was wrong? Or the opposite: you saw someone glowing with joy for no specific reason. It is this inner glow, the light of God, that we all need to let shine within us. But how do we find it and how do we keep it?
We do it by putting our priorities in order. We are all so stuck in our daily routines that we lose focus on what is really important. We work and stress all day to make sure we check off everything on the list we made ourselves. But what is on that list? Go to work, pay the bills, shop for groceries, drive the kids to their activities, make dinner, clean the house, etc. Congratulations you finished your list for the day, but why aren’t you happy? It is because you put the wrong things at the top of your list. We spend all day fixing everything except the most important thing, our inner selves.
In today’s gospel, the Lord tells us not to be anxious about the details in our daily lives. Do not stress about what to wear, or what to eat or drink because He will provide. “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.” We need to put God at the top of our daily list. The only way to have His light shine within us is to do God’s work and to live a life in Christ. If you don’t feel happy, then change your routine. We shower every morning to cleanse our bodies but we forget to cleanse our souls. By coming to church, confessing, and asking for forgiveness, we cleanse our souls and allow His light to enter. Wake up tomorrow, and every morning, and first pray to God, asking Him how you can help someone else today. Ask the Lord how you can help Him. And ask Him to help you throughout your day. Keep His light bright within you every day by putting God above all else. Only then can you be truly happy, with your eyes glowing bright with joy!
